There were also some other unique orientation events.
‘Rafting Day’
Students boarded a coach for about 30 minutes journey and arrived at the riverbank. We put on our life jackets, practiced using the paddles, got into the boats and set off on our rafting trip.
Apparently, enjoying canoeing and rafting is a ‘typically Canadian’ experience.
Students from various parts of Ontario, across Canada and even from abroad gathered together, with groups of around ten taking the helm of a single boat.
Although the rapids weren’t particularly fierce, students worked together to navigate tricky sections such as rocky outcrops and shallows as they made their way to the finish line. (I was allowed to take part, and it was actually quite tiring.)
Between the discussion on the orientation at the university campus and this hands-on experience of working together towards a shared goal, it seemed as though the bonds between students who learn collaboratively were growing stronger.
